So now we know just how much the closure of 93 magistrates` courts and 49 county courts will save the exchequer between now and the general election……..less than £100 million and that`s assuming the bean counters in Whitehall have done their arithmetic with some reasonable accuracy which is not a factor to be unconditionally assumed. That equals £176,000 per court closed per year. Reminds me of an apocryphal story about a ship and a ha`pennyworth of tar.

But it's not about the money, is it? The toffs don't like the idea that anyone might become a magistrate.
